Agriculture is important to both the urban and rural areas of the Willamette Valley and plays a significant role in the economy. Dalton Hobbs will discuss trends for agriculture, along with why we need to continue to support public agricultural development programs within the Oregon Department of Agriculture and their close partnership with organizations such as SEDCOR and other economic development organizations around the state.

Tom Fessler will examine Oregon agricultural diversity and how it makes us special, as well as makes things more difficult. Our distance to markets is a big drawback, but niches in the different markets can bring success.

Fessler knows a great deal about Oregon?s number on agricultural commodity nursery products. His family farm outside of Mt. Angel spans some 2,000 acres. Nursery products make up the primary crop, but the Fessler family also raises grass seed, beans, broccoli and cauliflower. No other agricultural industry in Oregon has had the meteoric growth of the greenhouse and nursery industry now valued at more than three-quarters of a billion dollars.

Dalton Hobbs has worked for nearly 30 years in a variety of communication, marketing and developmental positions at the Oregon Department of Agriculture. He currently directs the department?s internationally recognized Agricultural Development and Marketing policy area, which provides market access, certification, promotion and market entry programs for Oregon farmers, ranchers, fishermen and food processors.

Tom Fessler is a fourth generation farmer in the Mt. Angel, Woodburn area. Tom grew up working with his parents and grandparents helping on the farm. He knew at a young age he wanted to farm. The nursery operation was started in 1967, so he grew up both farming and growing nursery crops. After finishing high school Tom started in production at the nursery. After many years he started in overall business management with his father. Today he is general manager of the business. Tom is past President of the Oregon Association of Nurseries.

Plant research reveals new role for gene silencing protein

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? A DICER protein, known to produce tiny RNAs in cells, also helps complete an important step in gene expression, according to research on Arabidopsis thaliana. The expression of a gene, when an organism's DNA is transcribed into a useable product, requires activation via a promoter or an external trigger. Plant research to be published in Science helps to show that later stages of transcription are just as important. This is likely to apply to other organisms, including humans.

Termination is the final stage of transcription. Successful termination is dependent on DNA being transcribed into RNA with the correct sections, including a certain length tail.

Scientists at the John Innes Centre on Norwich Research Park have found that where effective termination through the normal mechanisms has not occurred, DICER-LIKE 4 (DCL4) steps in to tidy up. Without termination, transcription continues down the chromosome unchecked.

In this way, DCL4 plays a crucial and previously unknown role in transcription termination. It helps formation of the gene product. DCL4 is more commonly known to play a part in the opposite effect, gene silencing.

"DCL4 is a back-up to termination processes, helping a gene to be successfully expressed," said lead author Professor Caroline Dean from JIC, which is strategically funded by BBSRC.

The findings may help explain why gene silencing happens so often with transgenes. It was not known that so much attention should be given to the tail end of a gene.

"Our research shows that for successful expression the end of a gene is just as important as its beginning," said Dean.

When termination fails a lot of aberrant RNA is made -- this is degraded as part of a cell's quality control mechanism. This can have consequences for other sequences in the genome that match the aberrant RNA.

"If a gene ends badly, aberrant RNA will trigger silencing pathways," said Dean.

DCL4's ability to step in to rescue poor termination makes it important for both successful gene expression, a previously unknown role for it, and gene silencing.

The research was funded by JIC's strategic funding from BBSRC and by the EU research project SIROCCO, focused on silencing RNAs

If seeing the blooms of spring arrive fills you with dread, you've probably got spring allergies that are triggered by pollen. Here are a few ways to survive the season in good health and with your sense of humor still intact.

Say Yes To Meds---Consult your pediatrician first to determine whether the symptoms indicate allergies or a cold. It is likely the doctor will have some samples for you to try. And you and your child will know whether it's working pretty quickly.

The last thing you want to do is push pills at children. But children with allergies can really get side tracked when symptoms slow them down. And it's nearly impossible for them to understand that even though it's beautiful outside and everyone else is playing, they can't go!

Make friends with your neighborhood pharmacists. They are wonderful resources for suggesting alternatives for a generic and many times cheaper drug if a name-brand is not available. And this is true whether you are 8 or 80.

Cover the Mattress---A spike in seasonal pollen can turn out to be the last straw if dust mites are an issue. The additional irritants can be too much for the body to handle.

Covering the mattress and pillows with dust mite covers can drastically reduce the mite population, and make sleeping easier regardless of what's blooming outside.

Most stores have these in the bedding department, and while they are not cheap, reducing the population of these microscopic critters is worth it.

Pick Your Battles---Weather conditions have a big effect on allergies. Whenever possible, enjoy indoor activities on days that are dry, and windy. These conditions move the most spores and the wind can send millions of them into the air.

For grown-ups, you could choose to pack a lunch rather than go out on days when the count is high. For children, it might be possible to have a choice of indoor rather than outdoor recess. Trust me, your child is not the only one with allergies, and there are probably others whose children could also benefit from this option.

Know Your Stuff---Make the pollen count one of the first things you check in the morning. Knowledge is power, and knowing what the air is expected to be like where you are can help you prepare for the day.

The air is probably clearest after it has rained. And early morning and late afternoon are usually the times when there is the most amount of airborne spores.

Reduce Pollen Indoors---As much as you may stay on top of the situation, it's impossible to keep these tiny spores outside. Some of them will enter through doors or attach to hair, clothes, and pets.

One of the best ways to reduce the amount in indoor air is to continually filter the air. The good news is that not only will an effective cleaner remove seasonal irritants, but it can also take out the allergens that trigger chronic problems.

Bill Gates: We need crazy energy entrepreneurs

We need ?energy miracles,? or break through innovation, in at least five areas, and in each of these areas ?we need at least two hundred crazy people who think their idea alone can solve this,? said Bill Gates at the Wall Street Journal?s Eco:nomics conference on Thursday night. In a 30-minute interview on the second night of the three day event, Gates discussed innovation in carbon capture, nuclear, biofuels, and clean power like solar and wind, and provided his thoughts on carbon taxes, politics and government funding.

Gates said that it is particularly important to make sure that the ?rewards are there,? for these crazy energy entrepreneurs, and ?that is very unclear right now,? for grid-related generation technologies. You have to think why don?t we have more people doing things like that ? what is holding these people back? said Gates.

Gates himself has invested in a variety of energy-related startups, including nuclear company TerraPower, and battery company Liquid Metal Battery. In his talk he also said he is backing a startup doing gravity energy storage, which he referred to as ?gravel on ski lifts.? He?s also a limited partner in Khosla Ventures, Vinod Khosla?s fund, and Gates jokingly referred to Khosla as ?the pay master of crazy people ? some of whom we?ll declare sane,? in the future. That?s what venture capital is all about, said Gates.

Gates also had a word of encouragement for the energy entrepreneurs:

?I would encourage people who work in this area that the importance of this is right at the top.? The reason I spend time on it is because I think it is so critical to the environmental challenge and for helping the poorest. Cheap energy is like a vaccine.

While Gates has long said that the U.S. government needs to at least double its funding of energy research, he is bullish on that he says the U.S. owns the majority share of the world?s energy startup portfolio companies. But to help these entrepreneurs out we need to help make it possible for them to get capital, to scale up, to have access to China, and we need to create a framework that is very favorable to them, said Gates.

This not going to be as easy as the IT revolution, said Gates, energy miracles are fundamental breakthroughs in science and engineering.

Ron Paul calls Secret Service protection ?welfare? during ?Tonight Show? appearance

Ron Paul is virtually absent from the campaign trail lately but he did manage to find time for an appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," Tuesday night.

During the lengthy chat, Paul made news on a few fronts. Most notably, Paul explained why he has rejected Secret Service protection, calling it "a form welfare." However, he did say his preferred name would be "Bulldog" if he ever did receive formal security detail by the government.

"I would go after the Federal Reserve and all that big spending," Paul told Leno. "I'm an ordinary citizen, and I think I should pay for my own protection."

Today it was announced that Paul's campaign rivals Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum had recently received their Secret Service code names, "Javelin" and "Petrus," respectively.

Paul also waded into the contraception debate that has dominated Republican primary politics lately. He admitted to having prescribed birth control during his years as an OB-GYN in Texas despite his pro-life political views.

"I was also putting myself out of business, all this birth control," Paul said. "They had less babies." Paul says he has delivered around 4,000 babies over the years. When asked if women should have the right to choose, Paul said yes, but flipped the question back to the broader debate over personal rights.

"Yeah, I think so she should, but does the infant have the right to choose?" Paul said. "The baby at eight months and weighs eight pounds?should you, the mother have the right to abort? I have not been able to accept that."

The interview had plenty of light moments as well. At one point, Leno showed a clip with Paul's head superimposed on the body of a martial arts fighter.

Some conspiracy theorists have speculated that Paul has made an under the table agreement with Mitt Romney to continue his campaign in order to take support away from Romney's rivals.

"It's very secret, because he and I don't know a whole lot about it," Paul joked.

Paul was in Los Angeles for a campaign fundraising event.

Video game nation: Why so many play

A journey through the world of video games, which 183 million Americans play ? 25 percent over age 50. What's behind the fascination?

Gliding through the sky, long neck undulating, great, ridged wings beating, the dragon looks ... beautiful. Until it lands.

Thumbs working the controller, Matt Fries, a freshman at American University in Washington, D.C., throws fireballs at it with both hands. The dragon lifts off, and lands again. It belches out a stream of yellow and orange flame.

"He's done a lot of damage," Mr. Fries mutters. But it's early in the game.

As in video game. Sitting in his tiny Washington apartment, Fries is doing what millions ? actually, 10 million ? have done over the last few months: fighting dragons in the celebrated new game Skyrim.

Since its November release, Skyrim has won award after award and led reviewers to call it the "greatest role-playing video game ever made." In its first month, it made $650 million, almost double the entire year's gross in the United States for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," the bestselling movie of 2011.

Gamers know this. Why don't you?

C'mon. You don't. One surprising thing about the video game industry is that while adults play ? in fact, 25 percent of players are over age 50 ? most are unaware of how prevalent it has become in American culture.

For many parents, video games are what our kids love ? and we fear. One antigame blogger describes an avid user this way: a kid who "rarely goes outside, showers, or interacts with the opposite sex." The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry warns that children playing violent games "can imitate the violence they see."

We have esthetic complaints, too. A few years ago film critic Roger Ebert infuriated gamers by arguing that video games "can never be art."

Skyrim is a useful starting point to examine that view precisely because it has won so much praise.

"We design worlds," says industry legend and Skyrim director Todd Howard.

Mr. Howard means that instead of giving players the simple, gobble-up-the-bad-guys goal of the 32-year-old video game icon Pac-Man, games like Skyrim allow players to explore richly textured worlds, full of choice.

Well, the video game industry is itself a world worth exploring. Just how big is it? How many play? What makes games so popular? Can they do harm? Are they useful? Or ? as a Wall Street Journal headline put it ? "Are Violent Videogames a Threat to Society? Or Works of Art?"

First, the big picture. In 2011, the American video game industry says it:

?Recorded $25 billion in sales.

?Accounted for about 120,000 American jobs directly or indirectly.

?Paid workers an average of $90,000 a year, mostly in five states: California, Texas, Washington, New York, and Massachusetts.

Since 2005, the industry has grown eight times faster than the US economy. This is enough to have earned it the ultimate status symbol in Washington: a bipartisan congressional caucus to support games.
