Union Co. school district facing fines from state

UNION COUNTY, N.C. ?

The Union County Public School district faces fines and violations from the state.

In December, a Whistleblower investigation revealed workers at East Elementary in Monroe used two different chemicals to unclog a sewage backup.

The fumes made employees sick.

On Friday, the state's Department of Labor responded, issuing the district four citations, all of them classified as "serious."

The state identified the chemicals used as "Citra-sol" and "Floweasy drain opener containing 94 percent sulfuric acid."

The district was cited because employees didn't use gloves or eye protection while using the chemicals, and didn't inform other employees they were being used.

A district spokeswoman maintains children were not in danger.

"That didn?t have anything to do with students. It was an employee error," spokeswoman Luan Ingram said.??????

When reminded of the seven employees who sought medical attention, Ingram said one teacher had an allergic reaction to the chemicals.

Six others were checked, but had no issues, she said.

Ingram said they "retrained" the staff in January.

"We're not going to be using the chemicals anymore," she said. ??????

The violations come with $8,000 in fines.

The district says it will appeal.???????????
